Why mornings get away from you (and how to fix it)
Alarm, phone, the first work thought before your feet hit the floor. By 8 a.m. you’ve been awake for an hour and haven’t had a single moment that belongs to you.
We make lattes, so mornings are what our customers talk to us about. These seven rituals are the ones that keep coming back. And the people whose mornings sound genuinely good all tell us the same thing. None of them found an extra hour. They started making RUME at home in about a minute, stopped losing fifteen minutes to the coffee run, and gave that time to something that made the whole day better. They kept the morning treat and got the morning back. What they do with those fifteen minutes is the list below.
You don’t need all seven of these. You need one. Pick the ritual that makes you think “that sounds nice.” That reaction is the whole test.

Starting with the habit that no “morning routine” will mention. If you’re running short on sleep, the kindest ritual is more of it. A study in the journal Sleep Health found that losing just 16 minutes of sleep was linked to noticeably foggier, more distracted next days. So this list has one rule. Nothing on it is allowed to cost you sleep. If a calmer morning requires a 5 a.m. alarm, it isn’t calmer. Let yourself wake up later and see what the day does with it. The extra fifteen minutes has to come from somewhere, and for most people it’s the coffee run. A café-quality latte at home takes about a minute instead of a drive-thru line, so you keep the drink and the sleep both.

Ten minutes, outside, before your phone gets its turn. One customer told us she swapped her morning doomscroll for a short walk and was startled at how different the same day felt. The research backs her. Walking is one of the most consistently supported mood-lifters we have, and morning light does quiet, helpful work on your body clock. Forget steps and exercise. This is ten minutes where the first thing you look at is the sky instead of a screen. It takes about as long as the coffee run used to. Make the latte at home in a minute, and the walk is simply what you do with the morning you got back, drink still in hand.

The one we hear about most. Couples who sit down together for ten minutes before the day starts, two lattes and no calendar talk, describe it as the thing that made them better partners. Ten minutes on the same couch before you become co-managers of a household. The research on relationship rituals says the power is in the repetition, not the occasion. Nobody tells us the conversations were important. They tell us the day started on the same side.

Ten pages of something with no agenda for you. A novel, an essay collection, some poetry. People who read in the morning describe the same effect, where a chapter works like a door between sleep and the day. One customer put it simply: “my days go a lot smoother when I can prioritize me.” Pick books that welcome you back daily, with short chapters you can open anywhere. The phone will still be there at eight. Ten pages fit in the time a coffee-shop line used to cost you. When the latte takes a minute at home instead of a trip out, the reading is what you trade it for. Same drink, better-spent morning.

Keep the to-do list out of this one. A to-do list is the day’s demands sneaking in early. This is a page of whatever’s true. Three lines about yesterday, one intention for today, a running list of things that are quietly good. People who journal in the morning say it feels like clearing the counter before you cook. The research links the habit to lower stress and anxiety, and the version we hear about is simpler than that. The day goes better when the first words of it are yours. A page takes about as long as waiting on a barista. A café latte made at home in a minute hands you back exactly that pocket of time, and the notebook is what you put in it.

This one doesn’t have to look like anything. Skip the app streak and the special cushion. Sitting with your eyes closed while the kettle heats counts. Decades of studies link even short, regular meditation with lower stress and anxiety, and the people who stick with it are the ones who kept it small. If “meditation” feels like a strong word, call it sitting quietly with a warm drink before anyone needs you. That’s most of it.

Five minutes, on the walk, in the car, while the latte cools. One customer who calls his mom every single morning put it this way: it costs him five minutes, and it’s the best part of her day. The research on loneliness backs the instinct, with regular calls linked to measurably less of it on both ends of the line. You don’t need news to call. You call because it’s morning, and mornings are better with company.
Read the list back and you’ll notice none of these rituals are about coffee. But when people tell us about theirs, the walk, the journal, the ten minutes on the couch, almost all of them mention what was in their hand while they did it. A ritual needs an anchor. Something small you already look forward to, that gets you to actually show up for those fifteen minutes tomorrow, and the morning after that. For most of the people we hear from, the anchor is a warm drink.
So we made a latte of our own. Café-quality, ready in about a minute, no machine, for a day that’s better served by skipping a drive-thru. A ritual you have to fight for doesn’t survive a rushed Tuesday. Whichever one you pick, you deserve a drink that will be right by your side.
Pick your ritual. We’ll bring the anchor. $4.50 a latte, free shipping, welcome offer built right in below.
I’ve always loved bouncing around to different coffee shops and brands but RUME is the one thing that stuck. It’s been months now and I still haven’t gotten sick of it. I literally go to sleep every night looking forward to having it the next morning.
I bought RUME thinking it’d be a nice thing to keep at the office. Then I switched to working from home, and it turned into the reason my mornings actually feel put-together. A real latte without getting dressed to go stand in a line for one.
RUME is amazing, so tasty and efficient, you’d have no idea it was an instant coffee by the look and taste (but that’s also the best part because I don’t know how to make a good latte at home) has absolutely made my morning routine so nice and I look forward to my coffee every morning!!
We have a simple goal: to make a damn good latte that’s accessible, whatever your lifestyle may be. Along the way we’ve found a few specific areas that it tends to be the most beneficial to peoples’ lives.
The short answer is yes, absolutely — there’s a lot more coming.
To be clear, RUME isn’t a “latte company”, and it never will be. What we’re building is a mission that outlives any single product we’ll ever make: to never stop making your comfort-beverage experience more rewarding.
Somewhere along the line, the big coffee chains who got here first stopped trying — they got big, got comfortable, and decided “good enough” was good enough. The drinks got worse, the store became less inviting, and yet they continue to raise prices. They’ve chipped away at the trust of their customers with thousands of micro-decisions that I’ve personally felt, and I’m sure you have too. That’s the one place we’re built to never end up. So even if we handed you the best coffee in the world tomorrow, we still wouldn’t be finished. There’s always a better way, and we intend to be the ones who find it — every single time.
That’s the promise underneath everything we make: it’ll always be us.
It’s also why we’re not in a hurry to become everything at once. We could add a dozen products tomorrow, but we’d rather be unforgettable at what we already do than forgettable at everything. At this early stage, we’re focused on earning your trust through making every touchpoint (even beyond the drinks themselves) as satisfying and carefully considered as possible.

A note from our founder:
Your favorite café was never the problem. A latte made by someone who actually cares, somewhere you’re in no hurry to leave — that’s worth every dollar, and we’d never tell you otherwise.
The problem is the rest of the week. Most mornings you can’t make it there, so you settle for the fast-coffee chain instead: the drive-thru, the line, a $7 cup that’s mostly sugar. You pay café prices and get nothing that feels like a café.
We didn’t think that was fair. So we crafted a latte of our own — the way it should taste, at the price it should cost, ready in the time you’ve actually got.
Keep going to your favorite cafés, we still go to ours. But on the days you can’t, we’ve got you covered.
